Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
