At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Police Raid on Organized Crime
A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's past.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. More than 80 individuals were arrested.
Violent conflicts erupted when about 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
Government representatives said no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community members have compared the hillside area - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.
