Chicago's MLB Team Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative $34 Million Contract.

In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Added Benefits

The contract grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16M for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the league MVP award.
  • $500K for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for placing in the top ten.
  • An identical bonus for winning the top rookie honor.

The agreement provides that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his permission and makes him a unrestricted player at the end of the contract. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club get a supplemental fee of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to represent the Chicago franchise, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a last-place season, placing last in the AL Central but representing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, surpassing the longstanding record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was limited to just 56 appearances due to an side strain. Despite recording 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 HRs and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to third base.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a game-ending two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the championship game against the USA, he blasted a equalizing homer in the early innings, helping Japan's subsequent championship win.

The lefty slugger is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on Monday.
