Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the early candidates under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
Pereira was sacked on the weekend after the squad's 10-match winless start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic links to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of games for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves directors as they begin the process of appointing a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a surprising choice considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means the club would not need to provide any buyout fee.
