Far-Right Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile New Leader.
After a definitive final ballot, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Triumph
After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having previously been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely focused on promises to tackle increasing violence and drastically curb immigration.
He consistently cited immigrants, notably the around 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the race, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the inauguration or face removal.
His plans included controversial measures such as constructing detention centers, high walls, security fences, and strengthening the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Within a Regional Trend
Numerous observers view Kast's victory as aligning with a broader right-wing shift in South America, similar to recent electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other analysts further view it as a continuation of the predictable rotation of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Solid Majority
Despite his clear electoral triumph, Kast will not hold an absolute majority in parliament, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even when all conservative parties are grouped together.
This legislative reality may challenge his plans, including a pledge to slash public spending by billions within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to provided specifics.
"There are numerous aspects about what a Kast presidency will look like that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will achieve them," commented a political professor.
The professor added, "On economic policy, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies common for the right. However where there is far less uncertainty is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the race."
