Gas Detonation Costs Three Law Enforcement Officers While Executing Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.
Sequence of Events
The explosion took place as police and firefighters approached the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was found soon after. All three have been taken to medical facility.
The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area revealed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the residence was facing an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings set off the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.
A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the blast included eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
The official was convinced the blast had occurred on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the blast, he said officers had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being opened”.
Local Response
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had died in the line of duty.
