Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at Eighty-One Years of Age
Global audiences mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born reggae singer and actor whose captivating vocal talent was instrumental in popularizing reggae music worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of 81.
“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.
Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and uplifting spirit earned him a large and longstanding fanbase.
In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
Jimmy Cliff was one of just a handful of artists, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
