The prospect of a serious and intriguing heavyweight clash between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the London's O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the challenged industry. “Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he could have just waited for his time. He said ‘No.’ He chose to box – and with Parker because it gives him a chance to jump the queue.”

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not considering defeat. I have respect for my rival and what he has done and his preparation for this bout. But I am on a higher plane and I am intending to prove it on Saturday.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the pair of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my career and the biggest fight of my life. But every time I step up I rise to the occasion. The upcoming fight will be no exception. The divide between Parker's status and my perceived standing has been a recurring narrative throughout my career.

“He has vast experience for a long time, with a numerous contests on his resume. By no means is he an aged fighter but he has been in the boxing world for a while and had some heavy fights. I've also endured brutal fights and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a significantly more of those than me.”

But the lingering doubt persists that Parker will be too experienced, and too skilled, for Wardley. He should win a bruising battle with the confidence that he is next in line for Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a clear gap.
