Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the exact moment he received the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal situation. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by classic horror movies, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
