The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
