'Trapped in a Dreadful Dream': Families of Unaccounted For Teenagers Await Answers After Ski Resort Blaze
The families of teens unaccounted for after a deadly inferno at a bar in a Switzerland's ski resort are facing an painful wait for official news and pleading for clues about their family members publicly.
The inferno devastated the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of New Year's Day. Verified video reveal the roof structure igniting as beverages with sparklers are held aloft.
Authorities have indicated that it could take an extended period to identify the fatalities of the fire, which claimed the lives of four dozen individuals and hurt another 119. Officials said on the latest update that 113 of the those hurt have been identified, with the process ongoing to name the other six.
In the meantime, relatives have been taking to social media to request any news about their loved ones who were at the bar that fateful night.
Appeals for the Missing
The fate of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, 16, are currently unknown, according to an appeal from his family.
The who lives of Lutry near the city, explained to a publication that she had returned to the city to check whether he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the same in the capital, but was unsuccessful.
"This is a living nightmare, a horror. The options are finding my son in the morgue, or I find him in intensive care. It's horrific," she told the paper.
She explained that some of his companions had been discovered with burns covering nearly half their bodies. "There are no words; they went through hell."
The Italy's foreign ministry has said that six of its citizens are still unaccounted for.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, who hailed from Genoa but now residing in the UAE.
The national sporting body has released a tribute that he is no longer with us, without mentioning the fire, paying tribute to a "young athlete who embodied dedication and true sportsmanship."
His parent, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around the new year. An official spokesperson has clarified that a formal confirmation of his death is still pending.
Additional Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also unaccounted for. His mother told reporters that he had been on holiday but had gone out with a group and found himself at the venue.
"A companion informed me they fled after the fire started and that he had his phone with him, but then at a certain point he lost sight of him," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a identifiable gold chain.
One of his educators said, "I've always been struck by his good nature and smile, combined with great responsibility. He would frequently ask if get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Greek and Swiss nationality but lives permanently in Switzerland, was also present on that night, according to reports.
Her sibling has shared an appeal on social media, saying the family has had "no news" regarding the 15-year-old or the group she was with, who are also reported missing.
Officials from her country of origin say they are continuing to monitor the case.
