A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and looking forward to playing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a New Record

Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

In late December, Williams wed Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
