Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted during his visit to the US capital that the Russian president's move to seek talks with Donald Trump demonstrates the Kremlin is feeling pressure. He remarked, "We can already see that Russia is scrambling to resume dialogue immediately after it hears about Tomahawks." This statement referred to recent musings about providing advanced weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Diplomatic Moves and Global Responses

An ex- American diplomat, Dan Fried, observed, "Putin is attempting to derail the momentum toward greater pressure on Russia." He added, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the likelihood of moving toward a truce by pressuring Moscow to engage sincerely appear to have diminished."

The situation came after the US president had recently been strengthening his language toward Moscow until Thursday's conversation with Putin, which the Kremlin characterized as "extremely frank and constructive."

European Energy Sanctions and Market Impact

The European Union have established a mandate for fuel suppliers into the EU to demonstrate their products are not made from Russian crude, as stated in a document released on recently. This step is part of the European Union's forthcoming ban on purchases of fuels made from Russian petroleum, which is included in its latest restrictive measures against Russia over its military actions in the region.

Market experts noted that investment activity appeared to be factoring in the potential end of India's purchases of Russian crude. Several oil processors in India are preparing to reduce Russian oil imports, with expectations of a phased decrease, as reported by sources familiar with the situation.

"This is a positive development for the crude oil price as it would eliminate a big customer of Russian crude," commented a market analyst, noting that oil prices were stable on the trading day.

Security Situation and Infrastructure Attacks

A large-scale Moscow's unmanned aircraft and missile attack hit energy infrastructure in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, causing outages in eight areas. Authorities in Ukraine stated that Russian forces launched hundreds of drones and many of projectiles, along with glide bombs.

"This autumn, the Russians use daily opportunities to attack at our power facilities," said Ukraine's president, noting that strikes impacted the regions of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, central Ukraine, Sumy and Vinnytsia.

International Political Responses

Ukraine's representative to Washington, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Moscow showed its real approach to negotiations through the "terror" of such strikes. "Russia once again opted for missiles over dialogue, making this attack into a direct setback to current peace efforts," she said.

Meanwhile, the European Union's foreign policy chief, the bloc's representative, announced that the EU had little option but to build up anti-drone defences against Russian threats. She revealed a "plan" to prepare for possible conflict by 2030, featuring a new anti-drone system to be completely functional by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, called the "EU defensive program," is expected to start operations initially by the 2026 timeline and be completely operational by the following year. Brussels aims to obtain the backing of member state representatives at a summit in the coming days.
